DUSHANBE, March 2, Asia-Plus - A government commission has vetted all higher educational institutions in the republic for correspondence to their status.

Adviser to the education minister, Zamon Alifbekov, has told Asia-Plus that lately, many institutes having only one profile were reorganized into universities.  “For example, Tajik Pedagogical Institute has only one profile and trains only teachers for secondary schools,” Alifbekov said, noting that many higher educational institutions in the republic will be accredited repeatedly.

He also does not rule out that a number of the higher educational institutions in Tajikistan will reduce.  “Students at the Institute of Transport may obtain the same specialty at Tajik Technical University,” Alifbekov said, adding that the institute does not have appropriate basis and enough number of teachers.

The commission members include representatives from the president’s office, education ministry and other relevant organizations.  The commission’s work will last till March 25 and report on the work done will be submitted for consideration to the government.

According to information from the Ministry of Education, at present 30 higher educational institutions and eight branches of the higher educational institutions are functioning in Tajikistan.
