Twenty avalanches and sixteen rockfalls were reported in mountain areas of Tajikistan yesterday alone.  The most serious situation reportedly emerged on Dushanbe–Sangvor (formerly Tavildara) and Khorog-Ishkashim (Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region) roads.

A series of snow-slides occurred yesterday in Vanj, Rushan, Shugnan and Ishkashim districts of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region, Sangvor district (Rasht Valley) and Varzob district, according to the Emergencies Committee.

In all, twenty avalanches and sixteen rockfalls were reported in the country on March 28.  No injured was reported, Umeda Yusufi, a spokeswoman for the Emergencies Situation, said.

According to her, an avalanche that occurred yesterday in the village of Darai Hairon in Sangvor district destroyed four personal subsidiary plots.

According to the Hydrometeorology Agency (Hydromet), rainy weather will last in the country until the end of this week and torrential rains are expected in mountain areas.  Heavy precipitation in mountain areas can cause the water level in rivers to rise, and therefore, the risk of floods, mudslides and landslides in mountain areas is high.

Warmer temperatures have increased the risk of further avalanches in mountain areas of the country, and therefore, the Emergencies Committee advises people to refrain from traveling unnecessarily to mountain areas.
