The upcoming CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) summit, set for October 10 in Dushanbe, will see the arrival of eight heads of state from member countries.  The following leaders are expected to attend:

  • Vladimir Putin, President of Russia
  • Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan
  • Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia
  • Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus
  • Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kazakhstan
  • Sadyr Japarov, President of Kyrgyzstan
  • Serdar Berdymuhamedov, President of Turkmenistan
  • Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, discussions during the summit will focus on regional and global security, enhancing political dialogue, strengthening trade and economic cooperation, and expanding humanitarian and cultural exchanges within the CIS. At the conclusion of the meeting, a series of agreements are expected to be signed.

 

State visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin

In addition to the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled for a state visit to Tajikistan on October 9. During the visit, there will be "one-on-one" talks, followed by an expanded meeting.  The outcome of these talks will be the signing of bilateral and intergovernmental documents. After the visit, a joint press conference will be held by the Presidents of Tajikistan and Russia.

 

Central Asia-Russia meeting

On the same day, a meeting will take place in Dushanbe with the Presidents of Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Russia in the "Central Asia - Russia" format.  The discussions will focus on bilateral cooperation, coordinating actions to combat terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and other transnational challenges.  A joint statement and an Action Plan are expected to be adopted as a result of the meeting.

 

CIS Ministerial Council and tightened security measures

Additionally, the CIS Ministerial Council will meet on October 9, where foreign ministers will exchange views on strengthening multilateral cooperation, ensuring security, and fostering sustainable development.

Ahead of these international events, security measures have been heightened in the Tajik capital.  Several roads, mosques, markets, and large shopping centers in Dushanbe will be closed for periods ranging from 3 to 6 days.
