DUSHANBE, August 15, Asia-Plus  -- President Emomali Rahmon today sent a telegram of congratulations to his Indian counterpart, Mrs. Pratibha Patil, on occasion of India’s Independence Day, according to presidential press service.   

In his message, President Rahmon said that Tajikistan attaches significant importance to expansion of bilateral cooperation with India, noting that further expansion of cooperation between the two friendly countries will be in the befit of peace and stability in the region.   

The world''s second most populous country has emerged as a major power after a period of foreign rule and several decades during which its economy was virtually closed.  

After more than two hundred years of British rule, India finally won backs its freedom on August 15, 1947.  The day is a national holiday in India.  It is celebrated all over the country through flag-hoisting ceremony.  The main celebration takes place in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at the Red Fort and delivers a nationally televised speech from its ramparts. In his speech, he highlights the achievements of his government during the past year, raises important issues and gives a call for further development. The Prime Minister also pays his tribute to leaders of the freedom struggle.
