DUSHANBE, September 17, 2008, Asia-Plus -- The 16th session of the upper house (Majlisi Milli) of Tajik parliament (Majlisi Oli) that was held in Dushanbe on September 17 discussed the issue of renaming the Anderob jamoat in GBAO’s Ishkashim district the jamoat named after Askar Zamirov.
Addressing the session, the Majlisi Milli member Hoji Akbar Turajonzoda spoke against renaming settlement in the country and naming them after persons.
“If we rename settlements and name them after former parliamentarians we will not have any settlement with its historical name in the future,” Mr. Turajonzoda said.
However, the Majlisi Milli members endorsed this proposal that had been submitted to the upper house by the government.
Speaking at the session, the Majlisi Milli speaker Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev pointed to the necessity of applying to the government with proposal not to allow naming settlements after persons.
We will recall that in the Soviet time, Askar Zamirov was deputy of the Supreme Council of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic and the first secretary of district committee of the Communist Party in Ishkashim.
