On March 20, 2021, Mr. Takayuki Miyashita, Ambassador of Japan to Tajikistan, attended a handover ceremony to commemorate the successful completion of “The Project for Construction of Women Center in Baljuvon District.”
According to the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, the project was implemented under the framework of Japan’s “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).” The Government of Japan reportedly provided an US$89,150 grant to Baljuvon district in Khatlon province for construction of women’s center and procurement of equipment.
Prior to the project implementation, there was no Women Center in the district and local women had few opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills to gain income. Upon the project implementation, the building of Women Center was constructed, and now local women can be provided vocational trainings, psychological assistance and legal consultations.
During the ceremony, Mr. Miyashita made a following remark “the Government of Japan has implemented a lot of projects in collaboration with the local governments to improve the lives of Tajikistan people, and it is an honor for us that the first women support center in Baljuvon district has been successfully constructed and we have opportunity to hold this splendid opening celebration with you all. The center will provide legal consultations as well as vocational trainings for women in the district. This type of facility will ensure peace of mind for many local women. We hope that this center will fulfill its purpose to the fullest and contribute to the development of the whole Baljuvon District.”
Along with local women and representatives of the local government of Baljuvon district, the handover ceremony was also attended by Mr. Abdusalom Rahimzoda, Deputy of Head of the Tax Committee, and Mr. Sherali Jalilzoda, Chairperson of Baljuvon District. The attendees in turn extended their words of gratitude to the Government and people of Japan for their support.
The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) is a scheme within Japan’s Official Development Assistance. GGP in particular implements grassroots-level projects in various sectors throughout the Republic of Tajikistan. Recipients of GGP grants include local governments, educational and medical institutions, and NGOs. As of today, GGP has supported 421 projects in Tajikistan, for which US$34.0 million has been allocated since 1996.
