Tajikistan has fallen six positions in the latest Henley Passport Index 2025, ranking 87th globally in terms of passport strength. The index, published annually by UK-based Henley & Partners, assesses how many countries citizens can enter visa-free or with simplified visa procedures.

Holders of a Tajik passport for international travels can currently travel to just 55 countries without a visa or with visa-on-arrival — one of the lowest totals in Central Asia. In 2024, Tajikistan ranked 81st with access to 61 destinations.

Only Turkmenistan ranks lower in the region, placing 93rd with visa-free access to 48 countries. In contrast, Kazakhstan leads Central Asia at 67th place (78 countries), followed by Kyrgyzstan (81st, 62 countries) and Uzbekistan (82nd, 61 countries).

Global rankings and methodology

Globally, the strongest passports in 2025 belong to Singapore, Japan, France, Germany, and Italy — with visa-free access to nearly 200 countries. At the bottom of the list is Afghanistan, whose citizens can travel to just 24 countries without a prior visa.

The Henley Passport Index is compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and considers 229 countries and territories. Passports earn points for each destination that offers:

·         Visa-free access

·         Visa-on-arrival

·         Electronic travel authorization (eTA)

The higher the number of accessible countries, the stronger the passport is considered.
