DUSHANBE, August 12, 2008, Asia-Plus - Afghan President Hamid Karzai has suggested a turn around in strategy on the war on terror.

He has warned his Western allies that they will have to start targeting extremists in Pakistan.

President Karzai reiterated earlier allegations that the Taliban and al-Qaeda militants are operating training camps and launching attacks from the lawless tribal region in Pakistan, which borders on Afghanistan.

He said Afghanistan was seen as a training ground for terrorists until the US drove the fundamentalist Taliban from power in the wake of the 11th September 2001 attacks on the United States.

President Karzai says the war on terror is doomed to fail because militants are now hiding in Pakistan, not Afghanistan.

For the past several days, there has been heavy fighting in western Pakistan between the government army and Islamic militants.
