DUSHANBE, March 15, 2013, Asia-Plus – Kyrgyz and Tajik borders services have singed a protocol on jointly guarding the most difficult stretches of common border, Kyrgyz media outlets report, referring to Kyrgyz border service.
Lieutenant-General Tokon Mamytov, Chairman of the State Border Service of Kyrgyzstan and Lieutenant-General Sherali Mirzo, Chairman of the Border Guards Department under the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan reportedly discussed issues related to formation of joint border units on March 14 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The sides also reached an agreement on setting up joint border commission to investigate conflict situations on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. In case of necessity, joint border squads will be formed, Kyrgyz media sources said.
The Kyrgyz news agency, KirTAG , also reports that Kyrgyzstan has reached an agreement with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan not to construct economic facilities on the disputed stretches of common borders.
“The majority of border disputes arises from the pasture or water use problems, and therefore, we have reached an agreement with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan not to build economic facilities on the disputed stretches of border,” Kyrgyz border service chief Tokon Mamytov was quoted as saying by KirTAG .
