DUSHANBE, May 24, Asia-Plus - There are 159 inmates per each 100,000 people in Tajikistan, the Azerbaijani APA news agency reports referring to the latest statistics provided by the International Center for Penitentiary Studies.  

Among the CIS states, Tajikistan is second to Armenia , where there are 92 inmates per 100,000 people. 

Russia and Belarus top the CIS in terms of number of inmates.  In these countries, there are 532 convicts per each 100,000 people.  

They are followed by Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan (489), Ukraine (417), Kyrgyzstan (390), Estonia (389), Kazakhstan (386), Latvia (337), Moldova (297), Lithuania (234), Azerbaijan (198) and Georgia (165).     

According to the source, nine million people throughout the world were sentenced to various terms in prison in 2005.
