Uzbekistan President-elect Shavkat Mirziyoyev was sworn in on December 14 at a joint session of both houses of the parliament.

Following the death of President Islam Karimov, Shavkat Mirziyoyev was appointed by the Supreme Assembly as interim President of Uzbekistan on September 8, 2016.  On December 5, 2016, he was declared Uzbekistan's 2nd President, after winning 88.6% of the vote in the Uzbekistani presidential election, 2016.

The elections took place on December 4.  Four candidates ran for presidency, Mirziyoyev from the Liberal Democratic Party, Deputy Parliament Speaker Hotamzhon Ketmanov from the People's Democratic Party, economist Sarwar Otamuratov from the Milliy Tiklanish (National Revival) Democratic Party, and Narimon Umarov, the head of the Justice Social Democratic Party.
