DUSHANBE, June 7, Asia-Plus  -- Tajik law-enforcement authorities have seized 2,883.775 kilograms of narcotics over the fist five months of this year, which 37.8 percent more than in the same period of last year, Asia-Plus has learned at the Drug Control Agency (DCA).

The totaled included 856.624 kilograms of heroin, 1,255.819 kilograms of raw opium and 771.331 kilograms of cannabis. 

Officers from the counternarcotics agency have warded off 42 attempts of illicit drug trafficking over the same five-month period and intercepted 813.926 kilograms of narcotics, which 5.3 times more than in the same period of 2007.

Besides, four joint operations carried out by the DCA officers in cooperation with border guards and customs officers over the report period have led to the seizure of 38.959 kilograms of drugs.  In January-May, the Tajik counternarcotics agency has also participated in 15 joint international operations in cooperation with Afghan and Kazakh colleagues.  928.589 kilograms of drugs, including 312.159 kilograms of heroin, have been seized in those 15 operations.
