DUSHANBE, August 30, 2008, Asia-Plus -- Visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Tajikistan is an important landmark in contemporary history of Tajikistan and Russia, President Emomali Rahmon remarked at a press conference in Dushanbe on August 29, following his talks with the Russian president.
According to him, in the course of the talks, they positively assessed expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the Russian Federation, pointing out close cooperation between Tajik and Russian law enforcement agencies in countering terrorism, drug trafficking and transnational crime.
On the economic cooperation between the two countries, President Rahmon noted that more than 120 Russian companies currently work in Tajikistan, participating in implementation of projects in different fields, including mining, energy, exploration of oil and gas fields, etc.
“Besides, Russia accounted for more than 40 percent of direct investments made in Tajikistan’s economy last year – it is more than $160 million,” the Tajik head of state said.
Rahmon said that they had also discussed issues related to raising efficiency of activities of the CIS, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (SCTO), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Eurasian Economic Community (EAEC) and other organizations functioning within the post-Soviet area.
