KHOROG, January 5, 2009, Asia-Plus -- Traffic along highways from Khorog to Murgab and Dushanbe in Gorno Badakhshan has resumed today morning.
Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, Qurbonmamad Mirzoshoyev, an official with the GBAO emergency management agency, said that with support of the emergency management agency local road-maintenance services cleared those roads of snow yesterday afternoon.
“However, the risk of further avalanches still exists, and the road from Khorog to the Ishkashim district is still closed for traffic,” the GBAO emergencies official said.
As it had been reported earlier, a serious situation emerged in the region on January 2-4, following heavy snowfalls that even isolated Khorog, the capital of Gorno Badakhshan from outside world for one day. According to the Khorog meteorological station, storms have dumped up to 57 centimeters of snow in the city over the past two days. In some areas of the region, the storms have dumped up to one meter of snow, which is much more than an average monthly norm.
