DUSHANBE, January 24, 2009, Asia-Plus -- State and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the UN agencies and other international organizations in supporting reconstruction of Afghanistan’s economy were discussed at a meeting of President Emomali Rahmon with visiting United Nations Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mr. Kai Eide, on January 24.
Speaking to reporters after his meeting with President Rahmon, Mr. Eide noted that during the talks President Rahmon had confirmed Tajikistan’s readiness to support establishment of stability in Afghanistan and reconstruction of its economy.
The UN envoy expressed confidence that Tajikistan was able to play an important role in supporting rehabilitation of agrarian sector and irrigation system of Afghanistan and training specialists for Afghanistan.
Mr. Eide noted that the United Nations, for its part, was ready to support joint projects aimed at construction of automotive and railway roads joining the two countries as well hydroelectricity projects in Tajikistan and Afghanistan. .
