DUSHANBE, July 19, 2010, Asia-Plus -- Chairman of the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament, Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev, yesterday departed for Geneva to attend the Third World Conference of Speakers of Parliament that is opening here today.

Shavkat Saidov, an aide to the Majlisi Milli speaker, told Asia-Plus on Monday that Ubaidulloyev is expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings with senior representatives from the United Nations and speakers of parliament from a number of countries of the world on sideline of the conference e that is taking place from July 19 to July 21.

Tomorrow, the speaker of the country’s upper house of parliament will deliver a statement on a role of parliamentarism in development of Tajikistan, the aide said.

The 3rd World Conference of Speakers of Parliament convened by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a global summit focusing on democracy, the role of legislative institutions and their relationship with the United Nations. The broad theme for the 2010 Conference is Parliaments in a world of crisis: securing global democratic accountability for the common good.

At the close of the proceedings, the speakers of parliament will adopt a draft declaration on securing global democratic accountability for the common good.  This text has been revised by the Preparatory Committee in the light of amendments received from many parliaments.  The revised draft declaration was circulated to all Speakers of Parliament on 20 May.
