KHUJAND/QURGHON TEPPA, July 29, 2010, Asia-Plus  -- The number of suicide cases has increased in the northern Sughd province compared to January-June 2009.

106 suicides and 70 suicide attempts have been registered in Sughd province over the first half-year f 2010, according to the Sughd police directorate.

“The listed causes of suicide were mental diseases (32), family problems (35), economic problems (21) and so forth,” the Sughd police directorate chief Rauf Yusupov said.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against 15 persons on charges of driving to suicide; the cases have moved to courts.

In January-June 2009, 144 suicide and suicide attempt cases were registered in Sughd province.

Meanwhile, the Khatlon police directorate chief Abdurahmon Buzmakov told reporters in Qurghon Teppa on July 28 that 100 suicide cases have been registered in Khatlon province over the first six months of this year (125 suicide cases were reported in January-June 2009).

Among those having committed suicide over the report period are 51 women and 49 men.  46 of them have committed suicide following family problems, six others have committed suicide because of economic problems, and 28 of those having committed suicide over the report period suffered from various mental diseases, Buzmakov said.
