The U.S. Department of State has published budget estimates for 2017 that provide for US$41.6 million worth of financial support for Tajikistan.

This is much more than in 215, when Tajikistan received US$28.9 million from the United States, according to Radio Ozodi.

The financial assistance is reportedly intended to support state structures, create conditions for improvement of efficiency of work of security bodies, expansion of cooperation between the United States and Tajikistan in the field of security and support for development of civil society, entrepreneurship, education and hydropower engineering in Tajikistan.

According to the US Department of State, Tajikistan now faces problems such as food shortages, energy deficit, irrational use of water resources, instability along its common border with Afghanistan, widespread corruption, and decaying education and public health sectors.

The United States provides financial assistance proceeding from its foreign policy priorities that include regional security and regional economic cooperation.

The financial assistance is reportedly provided to Tajikistan in order to lower its dependence on Russia and raise its integration with Western countries that would also promote implementation of long-term programs.
