It is estimated that more than 900,000 foreigners have visited Tajikistan over the first six months of this year, Numon Abdughafforzoda, the head of the Tourism Development Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, told reporters in Dushanbe on July 30.

According to him, they plan to bring the number of foreign tourists visiting Tajikistan to 1 million by 2020.

“We have all necessary conditions for this,” Abdughafforzoda noted.

“129 tourist agencies now operate in Tajikistan and 53 of them have been established this year,” Tajik official said.

Among the most popular tourism routes Abdughafforzoda named Zarafshon Valley (Sughd province), Hisor Valley (central Tajikistan), Khovlaing, Baljuvon and Nurek (Khatlon province), etc.

Meanwhile, Tajik authorities are concerned that the July 29 deadly incident will provoke considerable distress for the government, which has invested considerable effort this year into promoting the country as an emerging tourist destination.  The stunning mountainous scenery has traditionally been a strong draw for foreign hikers, cyclists and mountaineers.
