Khujand, the capital of the Tajik northern province of Sughd, and the Uzbek city of Kokand have signed a memorandum on cooperation.

The press center of the Sughd governor’s office says the document was signed by Khujand Mayor Firdvas Sharifzoda and Kokand Hokim Marouf Usmonov during a visit of a Sughd delegation to the Uzbek city of Fergana last week.

The signing of the document reportedly laid the foundation for cooperation between the two the two cities.

Recall, Sughd Governor Rajabboy Ahmadzoda heading a delegation of regional administrators and businesspeople of Sughd province met with heads of Kyrgzstan’s Batken region (Omurbek Suvanaliyev) and Uzbekistan’s Fergana region (Khairulla Bozorov) in Fergana, the capital of Fergana region in eastern Uzbekistan, on April 23.

On the same day, a trilateral business forum entitled “Integration of Border Regions - the Key to Development” took place in Fergana.

Kokand is a city in Uzbekistan’s Fergana Region, at the southwestern edge of the Fergana Valley.  The city lies 228 kilometers southeast of Tashkent, 115 kilometers west of Andijan, and 88 kilometers west of Fergana.  It is nicknamed "City of Winds". Kokand's name derives from the well-known tribal family group of "Kokan" who belong to the Kongrat tribe of Uzbeks.

Kokand is at the crossroads of the two main ancient trade routes into the Fergana Valley, one leading northwest over the mountains to Tashkent, and the other west through Khujand.  As a result, Kokand is the main transportation junction in the Fergana Valley.
