The European Union Integrated Rural Development Project/ TRIGGER jointly with the Association of Producers and Exporters of Agriproducts of Tajikistan (IAPEAT) supported five representatives of the Tajik dried fruit processing companies with a study tour visit to South Korea.
Sweet persimmon is one of the most popular fruit crops in Tajikistan. You can find a persimmon tree almost in every family backyard. The total area of this crop in Tajikistan is more than 3000 hectares. The soil and climate of Tajikistan are favorable for growing persimmons, and up to 30-35 tons can be obtained from one hectare. Thus, the knowledge of persimmon drying, and storage is crucial for Tajik dried fruit processing companies.
The purpose of the study visit was to exchange knowledge and experience with the South Korean fruit industry. The study tour included visits to Sacheon-based primary persimmon growers and dryers, processors of different sizes, and industry organizations, including governing bodies. The participants also had an opportunity to visit the Agricultural Research Institute and the famous Seoul Karak wholesale fresh fruit market.
As a result, Tajik representatives of the dried fruit processing companies have gained a good understanding of the South Korea persimmon industry, including primary production, processing and drying methods of persimmon, and all the relevant support structures needed for a thriving processing industry. The Project will continue supporting Tajik dried fruit processing companies throughout its term.
The Integrated Rural Development Project (IRDP)/ Towards Rural Inclusive Growth and Economic Resilience (TRIGGER) is a joint project of the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to boost the added value of agricultural production in Tajikistan by improving water security and sustainability, enhancing the productivity of selected value chains, supporting market development, export readiness, enterprise promotion and economic policy advice.
