One of the major challenges Tajikistan faces is its road conditions, or more specifically, the widespread issue of poor roads, the Minister of Transport Azim Ibrohim said on September 17, congratulating the country’s road workers on their professional holiday, the ministry's press center says.

“And this despite the fact that more than 2,400 kilometers of roads, 326 bridges, 6 tunnels, and 219 kilometers of railways have been built and put into operation since independence," the minister noted

These projects, according to Ibrohim, have played a critical role in reconnecting and strengthening ties between the regions of Tajikistan.

He emphasized that in recent years, the construction and renovation of local roads have gained new momentum thanks to funding from private entrepreneurs and benefactors.  This has reportedly enabled the reconstruction of thousands of kilometers of local roads and the completion of numerous bridge projects.

The minister also announced that road workers and transport professionals have committed to bringing all international and national roads up to global standards within the next five to six years, ensuring proper maintenance and good condition.

Tajikistan’s Ministry of Transport operates six government agencies responsible for the country's highways, and 64 institutions managing road maintenance across the regions and cities.

The ministry's total road network reportedly amounts to 14,314 kilometers, of which 3,383.5 kilometers are of international importance, 2,184 kilometers are national, and 8,746.5 kilometers are local roads.

Meanwhile, earlier reports had indicated that Tajikistan's roads are considered the best in Central Asia in terms of quality.
