The main obstacles to the digitalization of agriculture in Tajikistan are limited access to mobile devices and the internet, a lack of knowledge about technology, and the absence of support and training.
These findings are detailed in a comprehensive study on the digitalization of the agricultural sector in Tajikistan, conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations among 1,400 small-scale farmers.
The study highlighted key barriers and opportunities for the adoption of information and communications technologies (ICT) in the country's agrarian sector.
Farmers who use ICT reported increased productivity, improved market access, and the adoption of sustainable farming practices.
The findings were presented at a seminar in Dushanbe, organized by FAO and the Center for Sociological Research "Zerkalo”.
Participants, including farmers, policymakers, experts, and technology providers, reportedly discussed the major challenges and prospects for digitalizing the agricultural sector.
“FAO recognizes the importance of ICT in transforming agriculture. It is the key to improving productivity, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable practices,” said FAO Acting Representative in Tajikistan Aghasi Harutyunyan.
The seminar served as a platform for discussing the study's findings and developing practical recommendations. Proposed measures include expanding internet access in rural areas, training farmers in technology use, and creating conditions for technology adoption.
“Our data underscores the need for targeted measures to address the barriers farmers face. Joint efforts by FAO, the government, and development partners will help enhance access to digital tools and improve agricultural efficiency,” said Veronika Sherova, FAO Digital Development Specialist.
The seminar concluded a series of events under FAO’s project supporting Tajikistan’s National Digital Agriculture Strategy.
