DUSHANBE, January 13, 2016, Asia-Plus – Another quite strong earthquake jolted the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) today early in the morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was recorded 28 kilometers of Jurm district in northeastern Badakhshan province of Afghanistan.  The earthquake magnitude in the epicenter was 5.6 on a Richter scale.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan.  According to Pakistan’s Express News , tremors were felt in Chitral, Shangla, Gilgit, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal and surrounding areas.

The USGS said epicenter of the earthquake was 66 kilometers of Ishkashim district in Tajikistan’s Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region.

Meanwhile, the Geophysical Survey of the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan said today that a tremor measuring 4.0 jolted Dushanbe today at 1:05 am.

A 3.0 magnitude earthquake could be felt in Yovon district (Khatlon province) and Rasht district (eastern Tajikistan).

The earthquake epicenter was reportedly located 282 kilometers southeast of Dushanbe in Afghan territory.  

There were no immediate reports regarding the casualties and damages caused.

We will recall that a magnitude-7.2 temblor occurred in Gorno Badakhshan on December 7, killing two persons and injuring ten people.  The Geophysics Survey of Tajikistan’s Academy of Sciences says the epicenter was 93 kilometers west of the settlement of Murgab, the administrative center of GBAO’s Murgab district, 138 kilometers northeast of Khorog, the capital of Gorno Badakhshan and 357 kilometers southeast of Dushanbe.

Another quite a strong earthquake jolted some districts of Gorno Badakhshan on December 26, at 00:14 am.  According to the USGS, the quake struck at a depth of about 200 kilometers and its epicenter was in Afghanistan’s Ishkashim district, which borders Tajikistan and Pakistan.  In the epicenter, the magnitude was reportedly 6.2 on the Richter scale.  The Geophysical Survey of Tajikistan’s Academy of Sciences said the tremor measuring 4.0 could be felt in Dushanbe.
