Torrential rain on May 7-9 caused damage to homes and fields in the Abdurahmoni-Jomi district in the southern province of Khatlon, according to the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan.  The village of Navobod was hard hit, with 20 houses destroyed.  112 people have been left homeless.


Heavy rain on May 7-9 caused a landside that destroyed 20 residential buildings and 100 hectares of agricultural fields, Umeda Yusufi, a spokeswoman for the Emergencies Committee, told Asia-Plus in an interview.  Fortunately, now human casualties were reported. 

167 families were reportedly evacuated on time to a safe place.  A tent camp was built for 20 families that were left homeless on the sports ground in the village.


Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda visited Navobod village on May 11.  He reportedly ordered relevant committees and agencies to explore a new location for the construction of a new village for the victims within ten days.
