DUSHANBE, June 27, Asia-Plus -- A ceremonial meeting dedicated to the 10th anniversary of signing of the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Reconciliation was held at the kokhi vahdt State Complex in Dushanbe on June 26.
Addressing the meeting, President Emomali Rahmon pointed out successes that have been made in socioeconomic development of the country over the past decade.
The president noted with signing of the June 1997 peace agreement, which effectively ended the country’s five-year civil war, foundations of Tajik statehood had been strengthened and collapse of Tajik nationality had been staved off.
According to him, an important task of society is to thoroughly study this difficult period in history of Tajik people and learn the right lesson from it.
“These pages of history should not be forgotten, they should be truthfully reflected and be good means for fostering young generation in the spirit of patriotism and humanism,” the president said.
Emomali Rahmon reminded that in a series of eleven amnesties issued since 1992, 60,000 people have been released from prison.
Noting that the June 1997 general peace agreement and gaining sovereignty are the two equivalent events for Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon called on the country’s people, political parties and public associations not to place personal, party and corporate interests beyond these values.
He expressed gratitude to foreign countries, international organizations and to all of them who had made contribution to reestablishment of peace and national accord in Tajikistan.
The meeting participants included Tajik MPs, members of the government, president’s office, ministries, organizations and enterprises, as well as political parties, public associations, diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Tajikistan, and foreign guests.
