DUSHANBE, October 24, 2011, Asia-Plus -- On the sidelines of annual meetings of commissions of the CIS and the Eurasian Economic Community (EAEC) Parliamentary Assemblies that took place in St. Petersburg on October 18-23, Tajik MPs held a number of meetings with Tajik labor migrants working in St. Petersburg.

Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament), says MPs familiarized themselves with living and working conditions of Tajik labor migrants working in Leningrad oblast.

According to him, migrant workers asked parliamentarians to assist with resolving the issue of lowering passenger fares on flights from Dushanbe to St. Petersburg.

We will recall that speaking at a meeting of Majlisi Namoyandagon board (Shuro), the Majlisi Namoyandagon Speaker Shurkurjon Zuhurov on September 19 called on parliamentarians to participate more actively in tackling problems facing Tajik migrant workers and protecting their rights.  The parliament speaker, in particular, noted he would take under his personal control meetings of MPs with labor migrants during their frequent business trips to the Russian Federation.
