DUSHANBE, September 24, 2014, Asia-Plus – Saudi Arabia has built world’s tallest flagpole breaking Tajikistan’s record.

According to Al-Arabia News Agency, the flagpole, which stands 170 meters high, was launched on Tuesday September 24 on the occasion of the Saudi National Day.

The flagpole is equipped with an automatic hoisting system, advanced cameras, equipment for measuring wind speed and a lighting system for important occasions.

The Saudi flag that flutters at the top of the pole reportedly weighs 570 kilograms, making it the world’s biggest flag.

Al-Arabia reports that the project took 12 months to be completed.

We will recall that a new flagpole erected in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, in May 2011.  A 165-meter-high flagpole hoisted a 350-kilogram country''s three-color flag, measuring 60 meters by 30 meters, in front of the Palace of the Nation complex in downtown Dushanbe.

Construction of the flagpole began on November 24, 2010, Tajikistan’s National Flag Day.  The flagpole has been designed and installed by Trident Support, Corporation and construction of the flagpole was financed by the Tajik Aluminum Company (TALCO).

The Dushanbe flagpole entered the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the world''s tallest in August 2011, in time for Tajikistan’s 20th anniversary of independence, which was celebrated the following month.  The flag was officially raised on September 9 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of independence.

The cost of the Dushanbe flagpole project has not been made public. But it has been reported that a 162-meter flagpole in Azerbaijan -- previously the tallest flagpole in the world -- cost over $30 million.
