The Director of the Football League of Tajikistan, Alisher Urunov, has been elected Vice-President of the Tajikistan Football Federation.

Recall, two other vice-presidents of the Tajikistan Football Federation are Khurshed Mirzo and Dilshod Jourayev.

The Tajikistan Football Federation is the governing body of football in Tajikistan.  The federation was founded in 1936 in the Tajikistan SSR as a sub-federation of the Soviet Football Federation.  It was not until 1994 when the Federation was accepted by the international community including the continental and global associations.

Dushanbe Mayor Rustam Emomali, who is one of the founders and co-owners of the football club Istiqlol, is the President of the Tajikistan Football Federation.

Football is the most popular sport in Tajikistan.  The national association regularly takes part in competitions organized by FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) at senior and youth level.  However, the country has not yet enjoyed any real success.

The only football club from the Tajik SSR that played in the USSR Top League was Pamir Dushanbe, where they played three consecutive seasons from 1989 to 1991.  Between 1974 and 1992, several Tajik footballers were members of the USSR national football team and the CIS national football team.
