Afghan President Ashraf Ghani today underlined the need for power transfer in a constitutional and democratic manner.
The transfer of power to a future president of Afghanistan must take place in line with the county’s constitution, he said at a conference in Dushanbe, according to Pajhwok Afghan News.
Addressing the 9th Heart of Asia ministerial conference, he reportedly once again asked the Taliban to declare call a ceasefire, which should be monitored by the global fraternity.
Instead of fighting, the Taliban should put their legitimate demands on the negotiating table, the president stressed while calling for the restoration of peace in the country.
A stable and peaceful Afghanistan was in the best interest of all countries in the region, he said, adding Afghans had been denied their right to peace for more than 40 years.
He remarked: “Today, peace is not just a wish of our people, but it is a necessity. We and our partners are looking for peace.”
A regional consensus on peace is vital to the Afghans, said the president, who hoped the Heart of Asia Conference would help end the conflict in Afghanistan.
