Iranian media reports say Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn in as the Islamic Republic's ninth president yesterday a ceremony attended by foreign dignitaries.
"I, as the president, in front of the Holy Quran and the people of Iran, swear to Almighty God to be the guardian of the official religion and the Islamic Republic system and the constitution of the country," Pezeshkian said at the ceremony, according to iranwire.com.
Senior officials from various countries, including Armenia, Tajikistan, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Cuba and Brazil, attended the ceremony.
European Union envoy Enrique Mora was also present.
Representatives from regional Iran-backed allies, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Islamic Jihad leader Ziyad al-Nakhalah, Hezbollah deputy secretary general Naim Qassem, and Houthi rebel spokesman Mohammed Abdulsalam, were reportedly also in attendance.
Tasnim News Agency says the ceremony was attended by over 80 foreign officials, including heads of state, ministers and special representatives.
More than 600 Iranian and foreign reporters covered the event.
The president reportedly took his public oath of office in front of the Iranian lawmakers and foreign guests, and delivered his inaugural speech.
The parliamentary law stipulates that the new president should present his plans and introduce his ministers within two weeks after inauguration.
The lawmakers will then discuss the credentials of the proposed ministers for a week before holding a final session on the votes of confidence.
Pezeshkian, 69, won the runoff race against Saeed Jalili on July 5, succeeding President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
