President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon began a three-day visit to the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region, or GBAO today.  The president’s official website says the visit is aimed at assessing development progress and participating in National Unity Day celebrations, which take place in GBAO’s capital, Khorog.

The trip began in the Vanj district, where the president was warmly received by local residents and cultural representatives in the village of Paishanbeobod.

Focus on infrastructure and development

The visit’s agenda includes familiarization with living conditions, the pace of construction and public improvement works, as well as the official opening of several social and infrastructure projects.  The tour also aligns with preparations for the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan’s state independence.

Local authorities plan to construct 140 new facilities across the district by the anniversary date. As of now, 90 of them have been completed and commissioned.

According to the president’s press service, these developments are expected to create new jobs, improve working conditions, and enhance public services and quality of life in the region.

Unity Day celebrations to take place in Khorog

The highlight of the visit will be the celebration of National Unity Day on June 27 in Khorog, the administrative center of GBAO.  Sources from the regional administration told Asia-Plus that preparations for the celebration are complete, and a grand public event is expected on the city’s main square.

Extended weekend for citizens

Since National Unity Day this year falls on a Friday, most citizens with a five-day workweek will enjoy an extended weekend from June 27 to June 29.
