A state-of-the-art radiation mapping laboratory officially opened at the Agency for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Safety under the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan (NAST) on August 7, marking a major step forward in strengthening the country’s radiation monitoring capabilities.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by NAST President, Academician Qobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, and Director of the CBRN Safety Agency, Professor Ilhom Mirsaidzoda.
Equipped with advanced software tools, the new laboratory is designed to produce high-precision radiation maps using data from gamma-ray surveys, dose rate measurements, and GPS coordinates. These maps will enable detailed monitoring of radiation levels across the country, enhancing public and environmental safety and supporting rapid response to potential radiological threats.
“The opening of this laboratory represents a significant step in bolstering the national system of radiation safety. Our technologies and scientific expertise will greatly improve the accuracy and efficiency of radiation monitoring,” said Khushvakhtzoda during the ceremony.
The facility is expected to become a key component in Tajikistan’s national CBRN safety framework, contributing to the implementation of government policy in the areas of radiation protection and environmental security.
Professor Mirsaidzoda highlighted that the integration of modern data analysis techniques and geographic information systems (GIS) will significantly improve forecasting capabilities and help mitigate risks. He also announced plans to create a comprehensive Atlas of Radiation Maps covering the entire territory of Tajikistan, based on the lab’s work.
The event concluded with a live demonstration of the software in action, showcasing sample radiation maps that will be used for safety analysis and strategic planning.
