A large chunk of the Ismoil Somoni Glacier has broken off in the Tojikobod district of Tajikistan, according to the country’s Emergencies Committee. The incident reportedly occurred on October 25 at around 11:00 AM near the village of Safedobi.

According to the Emergencies Committee, the detached section of the glacier slid down the gorge, but by 2:00 PM, the situation was fully under control. The size of the chunk is estimated to be about 2 kilometers in length, 25 meters in height, and 150-200 meters in width.

Preliminary reports indicate that there were no casualties or significant damage. However, experts have warned that ongoing rainfall and potential future break-offs could threaten the agricultural lands of the nearby village of Gulrez.

Local authorities and rescue teams continue to monitor the situation and are ready to respond quickly to any further developments.

The Ismoil Somoni Glacier is one of the largest ice masses in Tajikistan’s high mountains.
