DUSHANBE, March 4, Asia-Plus  -- India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced a package of aid for Tajikistan, worth $2 million to address the urgent humanitarian needs of Tajik people, Asia-Plus has learned at the Indian Embassy in Tajikistan. 

$1 million of this sum will be provided in money order and the rest part will be provided in form of medicine, warm clothes, generators and other essential equipment.    

In his letter to President Rahmon, Mr. Manmohan Singh assured him of India’s sympathy with the government and people of Tajikistan in this hour of need, the source at the Indian Embassy said.  

The source at the Indian Embassy also noted that work on two main projects sponsored by grants of the Government of India – modernization of the Varzob-1 hydropower plant and installation of the state-of the art lab at Tajik Technical University -- will start this year.  The Government of India will fund both these projects totaling more than 15 million US dollars.
