DUSHANBE, October 16, 2008, Asia-Plus -- The situation in Afghanistan is becoming more and more worse that poses threat not only to Afghanistan itself but the neighboring countries as well, Abdunabi Sattorzoda, the head of the foreign policy and foreign economic development directorate within the Center for Strategic Studies, remarked at a press conference in Dushanbe on October 15.
He noted that according to the latest official data, militants of the Taliban Movement are already just only 25 kilometers from Kabul. “It means that the possibility of the Taliban coming to power in Afghanistan is becoming more and more real that entails threat to Central Asia’s states, particularly Tajikistan, which has a long common border with Afghanistan,” Sattorzoda said.
In the meantime, Abdulvohid Shamolov, the head of the department for working out national strategies and socioeconomic programs within the Center for Strategic Studies, who recently returned from his business trip to Afghanistan, noted that they in cooperation with the London Center for Strategic Studies would hold conference in Dushanbe on this subject on November 11-12. According to him, representatives of 40 countries are expected to take part at the conference.
