In 2024 the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) recorded a fourfold increase of its annual investment in Tajikistan by signing 23 projects worth €88 million (US$90 million). Over 62 percent of the investments by the country’s major green lender, fully aligned with the Paris Agreement, were aimed at supporting green economy projects, says press release issued by the EBRD Dushanbe Resident Office.

It was a record year for the Bank’s on-going cooperation with domestic financial intermediaries, which demonstrated the EBRD’s unwavering commitment to support the sustainable growth of Tajikistan’s private and financial sectors. The Bank was actively supporting grassroots businesses, women and youth entrepreneurs and promoting climate resilient technologies across the Tajikistan by extending credit lines to local financial institutions such as Bank Arvand, First MicroFinanceBank (now ICB) and HUMO.
The EBRD also launched its flagship Youth in Business program. Through policy dialogue with the regulator and local market players, we helped to introduce policy measures aimed at greening the financial system and strengthening local capital markets.
In 2024 the EBRD’s Advice for Small Businesses in Tajikistan launched 41 advisory projects thus increasing its outreach to domestic SMEs. More than half (76%) of them were with women entrepreneurs and over 70 percent were in rural areas. More than 230,000 entrepreneurs around the country were reached through specialized trainings, networking, online outreach activities and knowledge sharing events.
The Bank organized a financial facility of €31 million for the national transmission network operator Shabaqahoi Intiqoli Barq. The funds will help increase the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply in Tajikistan and rehabilitate the existing transformer and construct a new one at the Sugd-500 substation in the north of the country.
The EBRD’s sovereign loan of €28.45 million will help finance major transportation improvements in the riverside part of Dushanbe. It will help upgrade key infrastructure and develop sustainable transportation solutions in the city.
Under the EBRD’s €100 million water and irrigation framework for Tajikistan, the EBRD and donors provided a combination of long-term loans and grants, which will help upgrade water supply and water treatment infrastructure in Fayzobod and 14 neighboring communities in the Rasht Valley and in Bokhtar and Danghara in Khatlon province.
The Bank expresses its gratitude to donors such as the EU, Austria, Finland, Japan, Korea and Switzerland, to name a few, for the ongoing support of its work in the country.
