DUSHANBE, January 16, Asia-Plus -- Abdurahmon Azimov, representing the Kulob district in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament), has been elected to head the Majlisi Namoyandagon Committee on Constitution, Legislation and Human rights.
A regular sitting of the fourth session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the third convocation was held on January 16.
We will recall that running unopposed, General-Lieutenant Abdurahmon Azimov, member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDPT), won parliamentary by-election in the Kulob district on December 16, 2007. The by-election was called following the death of Khumdin Sharipov, who formerly represented the Kulob district in the parliament.
Azimov had previously been head of the department for defense and public order of President’s Executive Office. Before that he had served as a commander of the Tajik border guards.
The session also endorsed amendments to the law on the border guards as well as ratified the government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan on free trade and approved the national program of Tajikistan’s foreign borrowings for 2008-2010.
