Tajikistan ranks 99th out of a total of 138 countries worldwide in terms of military strength in the 2021 Global Firepower (GFP) list.

The finalized Global Firepower ranking utilizes over 50 individual factors to determine a given nation's PowerIndex ('PwrIndx') score with categories ranging from military might and financials to logistical capability and geography.  The perfect score would be 0.000.

With its rating of 2.4019, Tajikistan is one position below Ireland (2.3762) and one rung above Armenia (2.4184).

According to GFP list, Tajikistan’s active frontline personnel are 9,000.

Tajikistan reportedly has 253 tanks, 400 armored fighting vehicles, 80 towed artillery guns, and 125 multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRSs).

The country’s Air Force reportedly has 31 aircraft, 4 trainer aircraft, 20 helicopters, 6 attack helicopters and one transport plane.

Tajikistan’s defense budget for 2020 reportedly stood at 79 million U.S. dollars.

Unlike other former Soviet republics in Central Asia, Tajikistan did not receive any military equipment from the former Soviet army. The Armed Forces were created on February 22, 1993.

The Armed Forces consist of the Ground forces, the Mobile forces, the Air and Air Defense forces, the Special forces, the Airborne Forces troops, the National Guard and Security forces (internal and border troops).

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan rank 51th, 62nd, 86th and 93rd, respectively.

The Unites States tops the list with a rating of 0.0721, followed by Russia (0.0796), China (0.0858), and India (0.1214).

Bhutan is at the bottom end of the ranking in the 138th position with a rating of 21.3233, preceded by Liberia (9.5763).

Global Firepower provided an analytical display of data concerning modern military powers.  127 powers are considered in the ranking this year, which allows for a broad spectrum of comparison to be achieved concerning relative military strength.

The GFP ranking is based largely on each nation’s potential conventional war-making capability across land, sea and air.  The final ranking incorporates values related to resources, finances and geography and over 50 different factors make up the final the final GPF ranking, delivering the “PowerIndex” value with bonuses and penalties applied where appropriate.  Updates to the list are attempted annually or when new information / corrections warrant them.
