In honor of Panjakent’s official designation as a World Craft City, the city will host its first International Folk Art Festival, "Suzani of Panjakent." The event will take place at the Olim Boboyev Cultural Palace from December 12–13, according to the National Commission of Tajikistan for UNESCO and ISESCO.
In Tajikistan, suzani (or suzane) refers to a large, hand-embroidered textile panel, a traditional art form of Central Asia. The word comes from the Tajik word suzan, meaning "needle". These decorative textiles, often created by brides as part of their dowry, are known for vibrant patterns and are traditionally used as wall hangings, wedding cloths, or for covering beds and pillows.
Festival Program
The festival will feature:
· An exhibition titled "Suzani of Panjakent,"
· Exhibitions of works by local and international artisans,
· An awards ceremony,
· A scientific conference.
One of the main events will be a meeting between artisans and representatives of the International Folk Art Market (IFAM) from Santa Fe, USA. There will also be a press conference and the signing of cooperation memorandums. The festival invites all interested artisans, designers, partners, and folk art enthusiasts to participate.
The role of IFAM
IFAM is a non-profit organization aimed at supporting artisans globally, preserving cultural heritage, and providing economic opportunities for craftspeople. The main event for IFAM is the annual festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where artisans from various countries sell their crafts.

Panjakent’s "World Craft City" status
Panjakent officially received the title of "World Craft City" on October 21, 2025, for its suzani embroidery traditions. This recognition highlights the craftsmanship and centuries-old traditions deeply rooted in the history of Panjakent.
World Craft Council and supporting traditions
The World Craft Council (WCC), a UNESCO-affiliated organization, promotes economic development through crafts, supports artisans, and encourages international cooperation. The WCC designates cities as "World Craft Cities" for actively preserving and promoting their craft traditions.
