Uzbekistan has urged the Afghan government led by the Taliban to sever all ties with terrorist organizations.
The Uzbek capital of Tashkent is hosting a two-day international organization on Afghanistan. Over 100 foreign delegations are reportedly taking part in the conference.
Addressing the conference on July 26, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev drew attention of the event participants on the importance integration of Afghanistan into interregional economic processes, according to Uzbekistan’s Dunyo news agency.
He called on the current government of Afghanistan to demonstrate strong resolve and take decisive measures to prevent and counter terrorism in its all forms and manifestations and to sever ties with all terrorist organizations.
According to him, this will facilitate the strengthening of confidence in the interim government.
The Uzbek president also urged the conference participants to direct their efforts to creating necessary conditions for Afghanistan to become a peaceful, stable and prosperous country free from terrorism and drugs.
“Our priority should economic reconstruction of Afghanistan, which is an important condition for achieving lasting peace in this long-suffering country,” Mirziyoyev added.
Meanwhile, Afghan media reports say an international conference on the current situation in Afghanistan was delayed one day in Tashkent on Monday. The two-day event, which was originally scheduled to kick off in Tashkent on Monday, began on Tuesday.
The main goal of the event, entitled “Afghanistan: Security and Economic Development”, is to develop a set of measures and proposals for the approaches of the world community to promote stability, security, post-conflict reconstruction in Afghanistan and its integration into regional cooperation processes in the interests of the multinational Afghan people and the whole world.
A statement released by Uzbek MFA, in particular, notes that the conference participants are expected to discuss issues related to:
- Developing coordinated actions on the Afghan vector, specific proposals and actions on economic reconstruction of the country, providing immediate humanitarian aid to the Afghan people.
- Establishing effective dialogue among the international community on acceleration by the Kabul new authorities of the process of the fulfillment by them of the key requirements of the world community.
- Establishing widely represented government, respecting women’s rights and ensuring girls' access to full-fledged schooling. This will be a fundamental condition for the completion of the national reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
- Reaffirmation by the Interim Government of Afghanistan of its assumed obligations to prevent the use of the country's territory against interests of neighboring countries, other countries and the whole world.
- The importance of unfreezing Afghanistan's financial assets abroad as well as implementation of various infrastructure development projects in the territory of the country in transportation, communications and energy sectors.
Acting Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi heading a high-ranking delegation is participating in the event.
